Beginning at the entrance to Pilot Mountain State Park:
- Pilot Knob Park Rd/CR 1151/CR 2053 1.5 miles to Old Winston Rd/CR 1152
- Left on Old Winston Rd/CR 1152 Stokes/CR 2051 Surry for 3.2 miles
- Left on E 52 Bypass/CR 1855 for .2 mile
- Left on E Main St/CR 1857 for 1 mile (downtown Pilot Mountain)
- Left on Key St/NC 268 for 1.5 miles
- Left on Shoals Rd/CR 2048 for 5.7 miles
- Left on Stony Ridge Rd/CR 2048 for 2.7 miles
- Left on Perch Rd/CR 2048 Surry/CR 1147 Stokes for 2.4 miles
- Left on N Old 52/CR 1236 for .1 mile to High Bridge Road
- Right on High Bridge Rd/CR 1157 for 2.9 miles
- Right on Volunteer Rd/CR 1136 for 3.6 miles
- Continue straight (West) on Chestnut Grove Rd/CR 1136 3
- Left on NC‐66 for x miles
- Right on Flat Shoals Rd/CR2019 for 5 miles
- Left on Mountain Rd/NC‐8 for 4 miles
- Left on NC‐8/89 for 5 miles
At the intersection of NC‐8/89 and CR 1001/Hanging Rock Park Rd/Moores Spring Rd, there are two options:
Hanging Rock State Park Loop:
- Left on CR 1001/Hanging Rock Park Rd/Moores Spring Rd for 7 miles to intersection of NC‐66 and Flat Shoals Rd/CR2019 to close loop
Mount Airy Spur:
- Continue north on NC‐89 for 28 miles
- Right on US‐52 BUS/S. Main St./S. Renfro St for 1.6 miles
- Left on NC 89/E Independence Blvd for 1 block (0.1 miles)
- Left on N Main St/CR 2111 (one way) for 1 mile (downtown Mt. Airy)
- Right to return to NC 89/S. Main St.
